Yb(III) in New Fluorophosphate Glasses with High Gain Coefficient

Date announced: 29 Oct 2005

A new series of fluorophosphate glasses doped with Yb(III) is introduced for fiber and waveguide laser applications.
A glass developed by AFO Research, Inc.and tested at University of California,Irvine (Dept.of Chemical Engineering and Material Science)exhibits an extremely high gain coefficient, G=0.95 ms*pm^4, and high quantum efficiency -94%. The refractive index (nD)is linearly dependent on ytterbium concentration, while the nonlinear refractive index is extremely small (n2=1.42x10^-13 esu). The emission cross-section which was found to be 0.87 pm^2 at the lasing wavelength of 996 nm,is the highest one among fluorophosphate glasses.
The combination of outstanding spectroscopic and optical properties demonstrates that the current Yb(III) doped fluorophosphate glass is excellent candidate material for fiber and waveguide lasers.
